Congress Passes Bill to Increase Safety Regulations
Congress has passed a bill that will substantially increase the Consumer Product Safety Commission’s regulatory powers. The bill, which passed the House with a 424-1 vote and the Senate with an 89-3 vote, comes after an increase of recalls throughout the toy industry. While legislation that increases powers of the federal government has not proven popular over the past 20 years, this bill may signal a reduction in the national anti-regulatory attitude.

Action Against Sagging Pants Raises Question of Civil Rights
Police Chief David Dicks of Flint, Mich., has made it a point to stop a certain fashion trend, telling officers to cite anyone seen wearing pants low around the waist. He claims that “this immoral self-expression goes beyond free speech; it rises to the level of indecent exposure/disorderly persons.” However, some feel he has overstepped his authority by imposing on basic civil rights.

Supreme Court Rules Against Death Penalty in Cases of Child Rape
A recent ruling by the Supreme Court further defined the standards of capital punishment in America. Citing the Eighth Amendment’s prohibition of cruel and unusual punishment, the Court ruled in Kennedy v. Louisiana that individuals found guilty of child rape may not receive the death penalty. Patrick Kennedy was found guilty of raping his 8-year-old stepdaughter in 2003 and sentenced to death under a Louisiana statue allowing capital punishment for the rape of a child.

AITLAmerica Inaugural Meeting: A Great Success
Just got back from the Beautiful Hyatt Regency-Union Station in St. Louis, MO for the inaugural meeting of the Association of Interstate Trucking Lawyers of America (AITLAmerica). Over 125 personal injury attorneys who focus on 18-Wheeler accidents attended and learned so much on how to gain new cases, take quality and extensive depositions and use demonstrative evidence. Frank Branson, John Romano, Ken Shigley, and Morgan Adams all spoke on various topics. It was a jam-packed 3-day event!
I also had the opportunity to speak on internet marketing for the legal community and how to gain new clients through a quality website. We had a strong question and answer session regarding content for conversion, up to date design and more than anything, how to utilize your site to bring new and better clients. I had a great time getting to meet so many of you from around the country and also to say hello to those of you that I have gotten to know over the past year. It was great to catch up!
On another note, Dan Ramsdell, the National Director of AITLAmerica, and his staff worked around the clock to create a quality CLE. I look forward to seeing you again over the next few months!
